In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Defying counsel to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
