The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward fans during a Sunday’s contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous examples include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate wealth of $16 billion, making the penalty manageable for the billionaire owner.
